Does Hydrogen Peroxide Contain Stabilisers or Additives?

Mission Control Disinfectants is often asked whether Hydrogen Peroxide contains additives or stabilisers. The answer depends on the grade.

What does stabilised Hydrogen Peroxide mean

What does stabilised Hydrogen Peroxide mean?

Keep reading to find out what stabilisers are and why they are used in some types of Hydrogen Peroxide.

  • Why are Additives or Stabilisers used in Hydrogen peroxide?

The molecular structure of Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2 which means it contains an extra Oxygen molecule when compared to water (H2O). If you try to contain oxygen, it pushes against its confines as it attempts to escape to the atmosphere. The stronger the concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide, more oxygen is involved and the harder it is to contain. The more that escapes, the faster it breaks down. Light also degrades H2O2, as do certain metal impurities often present in un-purified water.

Because of this, many manufacturers use stabilisers and dark containers to help slow down the rate of degradation and thus increase its shelf life.

  • What Additives or Stabilizers are used in Hydrogen Peroxide?

Stabilizers used in H2O2 vary between manufacturers but the most common ones include:

    • Colloidal stannate and sodium pyrophosphate are traditional mainstays.
    • Organophosphonates are increasingly common.
    • Nitrate (for pH adjustment and corrosion inhibition) and phosphoric acid (for pH adjustment).
    • Colloidal silicate is used to sequester metals and thereby minimize H2O2 decomposition in certain applications that depend on the bleaching ability of H2O2 in alkali.

A high degree of stabilization is needed in some applications, whereas purity is more important in others.

  • Does all Hydrogen Peroxide Contain Stabilisers or Additives?

No. Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide does not contain any additives, such as stabilisers. Medical and Dental Grade Hydrogen Peroxide usually do not contain stabilisers either.

This is because Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide needs to be suitable for treating products that may be consumed, such as meat, vegetables and drinking water. Additives are also avoided in Dental and Medical Grade Hydrogen Peroxide in case they cause adverse reactions when treating patients or specialised equipment.

  • Which Hydrogen Peroxide Grades Contain Additives or Stabilisers?

Stabilizers are often used in Commercial, Industrial, Pharmaceutical, Beautician, Reagent, Technical, Electronic and Regular Household Grade Hydrogen Peroxide.

Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide does not contain stabilisers and most manufacturers of Dental or Medical Grade Hydrogen Peroxide also avoid such additives so as to maintain purity.

  • Does Mission Control Hydrogen Peroxide Contain Stabilizers?

Mission Control Disinfectants only make Regular Household, Pharmaceutical, Food, Dental and Medical Grade Hydrogen Peroxide. Food Grade is the purest of all grades and Dental / Medical are simply dilutions made from Food Grade.

Concentrations we make above 6% are only available in 1 litre or 20 litre containers, as these are the only containers strong enough to contain the product effectively. 3% or less are available in 1, 5 or 20 litre containers.  We do not supply Hydrogen Peroxide in a spray bottle because they often leak, due to the nature of Hydrogen Peroxide constantly trying to escape it's confines.

  • Where can I buy Australian Made Hydrogen Peroxide?

You can buy Australian Made Hydrogen Peroxide from Mission Control Disinfectants at missioncontroldisinfectants.com/hydrogen-peroxide-australian-made-buy-online.

Mission Control Disinfectants produce any dilution of Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide you may require but only to a maximum strength of 12%. Only purified water is used in the dilution process, in order to avoid contamination from impurities often found in regular water.

Mission Control Disinfectants are the only manufacturers of Australian Made Hydrogen Peroxide to have been verified as such and thus bear the genuine Australia Made logo.

Any suppliers that claim to be selling Australian Made Hydrogen Peroxide are most likely buying from Mission Control Disinfectants and rebottling it, so as to resell with their own label. This is why they don’t have the Australian Made logo on their own product.
